Intro

The Anglican Church in Aotearoa, New Zealand and Polynesia is the Anglican Communion province serving New Zealand, Fiji, Tonga, Samoa, and the Cook Islands. Since 1992 it has operated through three tikanga, or cultural streams, and its authority is shared by three co-primates representing Aotearoa, New Zealand, and Polynesia.

Structure

The church is built around three tikanga rather than a single nationwide diocesan hierarchy. Te Pihopatanga o Aotearoa serves Maori Anglicans, the New Zealand tikanga includes the seven territorial dioceses in New Zealand, and the Polynesian tikanga is organized around the Diocese of Polynesia.

This arrangement is why the province has three co-equal primates instead of one primate. Each primate leads within one tikanga while sharing province-wide responsibility.
